Hey guys!
Winter is right around the corner and I know many of you guys have ugly, drafty, cold, sweaty, and non-functioning SLIDING patio doors that are gonna be a mess this winter...SOOOO....Some of you may be wondering...
Well your old pal JB is gonna tell you.
First please check out my mega HERE to see what options you should be looking for a in a patio door. I won’t go into details here but the main thing is that you door should have a “100% non-metal spacer”. Yes the quotation marks are important because that’s exactly how you should ask for it (a non-metal spacer).
So how much should a sliding patio door cost?
First we’re not doing the whole big-box special here. These are prices you should be paying PROFESSIONAL installers, contractors, or retailers to install your door. These guys will do the job right, stand behind their work with a labor warranty, give you a higher grade door than what you can easily get at the big box, and manufacturers like when you don’t DIY. See my post about going with the lowest bidder
Second we’re not talking about entry doors, French doors, double doors, garden patio doors, or any type of SWINGING door. That would be another post found HERE ONLY SLIDING PATIO DOORS HERE. Feel free to check the link on side bar about SWINGING entry doors though :)
VINYL
For a high grade, one color VINYL sliding door with two panels (So a 6’ door) you can expect between $2,000 and $2,500 INSTALLED.
Adding blinds between the glass or two-tone finish will add between $500 to $1,000 of cost to the INSTALLED product per upgrade item.
WOOD-CLAD
For a WOOD-CLAD door with two panels (6’ door) you can expect to pay between $3,500 and $4,500 INSTALLED.
As with the vinyl option adding blinds between the glass, custom exterior finishes, or custom interior finishes will add between $500 to $1,000 of cost to the INSTALLED product for each upgrade.
FIBERGLASS
For a FIBERGLASS door with two panels (6’ door) you can expect to pay between $3,500 and $4,500 INSTALLED.
Again...as with the other option adding blinds between the glass, custom exterior/interior finishes will add between $500 to $1,000 of cost to the INSTALLED product per upgraded item.
COMPOSITE
For a COMPOSITE door with two panels (6’ door) you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,500 INSTALLED. Wide range I know but these things can really be all over. An all white one will be around $2,000 with a wood interior trending towards the higher end.
And yet again...as with the other option adding blinds between the glass or custom exterior/interior finishes will add between $500 to $1,000 of cost to the INSTALLED product per upgraded item.
Now I know what you’re thinking...”But JB my sliding patio door has THREE PANELS¿!” Well I’ve got an answer for you...and the answer is...Quick Math™️. See the prices above are for TWO panel doors. Take the price range of your choice and divide it by two. So a $2,000 door averages $1,000 per panel. Then take that average and multiply it by however many panels your door has. So a three panel vinyl sliding patio door should start around $3,000 installed.
Now I know what else your thinking! “JB MY DOOR IS CUSTOM SIZE”. This sucks. I’m sorry for you. Custom size sliding patio doors are oddly expensive. Add between $500 and $1,000 to the cost of your door for a custom size. What is a custom size though? Regarding 6’ doors...Most manufacturers consider WIDTHS between 70” and 72” to be standard. Standard height will usually fall between 79 “ and 80”. If you have a door within those parameters it DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CUSTOM.
I still know what else you’re thinking “OMG I HAVE AN 8’ DOOR NOT 6’. That’s cool. It happens. Expect to pay between $250 and $750 more for that. And before you ask...”standard” widths fall between 93” and 96” for standard 8’ doors. Height ranges the same as before between 79” and 80” for standard.
But wait! Your door is TALLER or SHORTER THAN 79” or 80”?!?!?!? Well if it is SHORTER that’s sad. You’re stuck going custom and paying more. If it is TALLER than that range...than you may be in luck. Many manufacturers offer 7’ heights as standard but be warned, this type of size will add a couple hundred dollars of cost. A “standard” height is between 83” and 84” in this case. Anything taller than that USUALLY puts you in the custom range of cost in addition to paying more for an extra tall door.
Lastly we are gonna address you glass wall, folding door, and collapsing door people. These options are expensive as shit. We installed a three panel accordion style patio door and the stupid thing COST over $7,000 in just material. So unless you’re loaded ignore those sweet Pinterest and IG posts about them.
So I hope this was helpful. As always I’m open to direct messages but NOT on the IM feature. Send me an old fashioned private/inbox message (or DM for you kids) or comment below.
