Low tub and closet ceilings. Why

My wife and I have completed a down-to-the-studs remodel of our 1952 bungalow. There were many places in the house where the ceilings had been framed artificially low, such as the closets, the area over the bathtub. Once the plaster was out you could see the areas had intentionally been framed to have low ceilings.

We removed that framing and now have full-height ceilings in those areas. But we're stumped as to why the builder would have done it in the first place. Any ideas? The framing of our low closet. The cross braces were removed to give full heightW
